  • Fixing Ownership problems in Mac OS X Finder

by Nigel Ivy (Business Development Manager) 13. May 2010 10:42

We recently had a problem on some of our Mac computers where the ownership of some folder structures was causing problems. It was predominately with folders that were associated with an automated sync app that we use. We couldn’t edit or modify any of the content within the folder structure without inputting our admin password.

After some trial & error and research, we found that this seems to solve the problem:

Firstly, you need to click “Get Info” and navigate to the “Sharing & Permissions” tab of the folder structure in question.

Next you need to check that you have permission to Read & Write.

If you don’t have permission to Read & Write, you will need to unlock by clicking on the little lock icon shown below. This will require you to input your password and you will be able to change the settings.

Once you have given yourself permission to Read & Write, drop down on the little box shown below and click on “Apply to enclosed items...”.

This should reset your permission to edit any content within that folder structure.
